Snowsuit Fit Check: How a Kids' Outdoor Suit Should Fit

A practical snowsuit fit check for children: how much room to leave, where to look for pressure points, and how to test movement before you buy.

Quick answer

A kids' snowsuit should leave about a fist of room at the torso for a mid-layer, with sleeves ending at the wrist and legs at the ankle. It must let your child squat, reach and walk without the fabric pulling tight across the shoulders or seat.

Why a snowsuit that looks right can still be too small

Children rarely stand still long enough for a quick visual check in a shop. A suit can look correct on the hanger and still restrict movement once your child bends down to pick up snow or lifts their arms to grab a sled. The fit test matters more than the size label.

The other common error is sizing up too far. An oversized snowsuit leaves gaps at the wrists and ankles where cold air enters, and the extra fabric can bunch under a harness or car seat. Aim for room to layer, not room to grow into over several seasons.

When to size up and when to stay put

Size up if your child is between sizes and you plan to use a thick fleece mid-layer. Stay with the current size if the suit already has a fist of torso room and the sleeves reach the wrist without folding over the hands.

For toddlers, check the crotch and seat depth carefully. A suit that is too long in the body will sag and drag when walking, even if the leg length looks correct. If the seat hangs low, try the smaller size.

Snowsuit fit check in six steps

  1. Dress your child in the mid-layer they will wear outside: Put on the fleece or wool layer your child will actually use under the snowsuit. Then put the suit on over it and close the zip fully. Testing over a T-shirt only hides a too-tight torso.
  2. Check torso room with a fist: Slide a closed fist between the suit and your child's mid-layer at the chest. It should pass with light contact, not force. Repeat at the seat. If your fist will not fit, the suit is too small for layering.
  3. Test a full squat and reach: Ask your child to squat down, then reach both arms above their head. Watch for the fabric pulling tight across the shoulders, crotch or seat, and for sleeves riding up past the wrist. Any pulling or riding up means the suit restricts movement.
  4. Check sleeve and leg length: Sleeves should end at the wrist bone, not cover the knuckles. Legs should reach the ankle without folding under the boot. With adjustable foot straps, set them so the leg stays down without lifting the heel. Sleeves over the hands and legs bunched at the ankle both let cold air in.
  5. Adjust the hood and check visibility: Put the hood up and fasten it as your child would outside. It should stay in place without pulling back on the head, and your child should be able to turn their head freely. A hood that slips forward blocks side vision; one that is too tight lifts the suit at the shoulders.
  6. Do a final walk and step test: Have your child walk, step up onto a low stool and bend to touch their toes. Check that the suit does not drag at the seat, twist at the waist or gap at the back. If the suit passes all five checks, you have the right size.

Product details that affect fit

  • Flyverdragt Adi - thunder sky: Flyverdragt Adi has a normal fit, elastic at the back and elastic at the wrists and legs. The elastic back and cuffs help the suit follow the body, so check that these areas sit flat rather than digging in when your child moves.
